Launch of the PhotonLAB project: New medical technology incubator for photon-counting computed tomography at the Research Campus

A new ego. incubator, PhotonLAB, has been launched at the Research Campus STIMULATE at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. Funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the ego.-Incubator funding initiative, the project creates a unique development and testing facility for photon-counting computed tomography (PC-CT). The funding period runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2029.

The project will create a platform on which students, research staff and start-up teams can develop innovative ideas in the field of photon-counting imaging based on micro-CT and drive them forward to the point where they are ready for practical application. The aim is to develop new technologies and applications for medical technology, materials testing, security technology and industrial imaging, and to accelerate the transfer of scientific findings into marketable products.

PhotonLAB focuses in particular on start-up ideas in the fields of detector technology, image reconstruction, artificial intelligence, quantitative imaging and system integration. Through workshops, open-lab sessions, technical coaching and hands-on prototyping, students and researchers are specifically prepared for technology-driven start-ups. At the same time, the PhotonLAB offers ideal conditions for developing and validating algorithms, scanning protocols and spectral analysis methods in collaboration with clinical and industrial partners under conditions that closely resemble real-world scenarios.

As part of the Research Campus STIMULATE, the PhotonLAB complements the existing technology transfer and start-up structures – including transPORT, transFORM and the MakerLabs – and strengthens the close links between university research, clinical application and commercialisation. The existing infrastructure, together with collaboration with regional start-ups and industry partners, creates the ideal conditions for shortening development times, identifying technological risks at an early stage and translating innovative research findings into practical applications more quickly.

The launch of PhotonLAB has laid another important foundation stone for strengthening Saxony-Anhalt as a hub for innovation and start-ups. The project opens up new prospects for the development of cutting-edge imaging technologies and helps to further establish the Research Campus STIMULATE as a leading centre for translational medical technology and deep-tech innovations.
