The ego. incubator PhotonLAB is creating a unique development and testing facility for photon-counting computed tomography (PC-CT) at the Research Campus STIMULATE of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. Students, research staff and start-up teams gain access to a disruptive imaging technology and can develop their own ideas from initial feasibility studies through to functional prototypes and viable deep-tech spin-offs. The PhotonLAB aims to pioneer innovative applications of PC-CT in medical technology, materials testing, security technology and industrial imaging.
The focus is on fostering start-up ideas in the fields of detector technology, image reconstruction, artificial intelligence, quantitative imaging and system integration. Students and researchers are equipped with the skills needed for technology-driven start-ups through workshops, open-lab sessions, technical coaching and application-oriented prototyping. At the same time, the PhotonLAB facilitates the development and validation of algorithms, scanning protocols, phantoms and spectral analysis methods under realistic conditions. Scientific innovations can thus be assessed at an early stage, in collaboration with clinical and industrial partners, to determine their applicability and market potential.
As a technological bridge between university research, clinical application and commercialisation, the PhotonLAB complements the existing start-up and technology transfer structures of STIMULATE, transPORT, transFORM and the MakerLabs. The research campus’s existing infrastructure, together with collaboration with regional start-ups and established industry partners, creates the ideal conditions for shortening development times, identifying technological risks at an early stage and turning research findings into marketable products and services.
The PhotonLAB aims on:
- Establish a development and testing environment for photon-counting computed tomography (PC-CT).
- Foster deep-tech entrepreneurship by supporting the development and validation of innovative technologies and prototypes.
- Train students, researchers, and startup teams through hands-on workshops, coaching, and open-lab formats.
- Accelerate the transfer of research results into market-ready products by connecting academia, clinical partners, and industry.
- Strengthen Saxony-Anhalt as a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer in advanced and quantum imaging.
In this way, the PhotonLAB strengthens Saxony-Anhalt’s position as a hub for modern imaging and quantum imaging. It creates the necessary technological freedom in which interdisciplinary ideas are transformed into innovative solutions: for medicine, industry and new tech companies from Saxony-Anhalt. The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the ‘ego.-INKUBATOR’ initiative.
