New ‘Startup Designer’ Makerlab opens at the STIMULATE Campus of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg
With the launch of Startup Designer, a new ego.-INKUBATOR is opening at the STIMULATE Campus in Magdeburg’s Wissenschaftshafen to support early-stage start-up ventures and innovation projects. The focus is on design thinking as a user-centred method for developing, testing and refining innovative ideas. The incubator is aimed in particular at students, researchers and those interested in starting a business, and offers the space, methods and support needed to turn initial ideas into concrete and marketable concepts.
A modularly designed innovation space is available for practical implementation. Flexible working arrangements, prototyping materials and digital tools create an environment conducive to creative, collaborative and interdisciplinary work. The infrastructure is complemented by support from coaches and external experts. The incubator places particular emphasis on start-up ideas in the field of medical technology, as well as on circular and sustainable product development. By involving potential users at an early stage, technological developments are assessed in relation to their actual needs and application prospects right from the outset.
“With Startup Designer, we are creating a space where interdisciplinary teams can develop solutions tailored to real-world needs at an early stage. This not only significantly shortens the path from idea to prototype, but also increases the chances of start-ups achieving long-term success,” explains Prof. Georg Rose, spokesperson for the Research Campus STIMULATE.
With the launch of the Startup Designer, OVGU is expanding its existing start-up and technology transfer ecosystem to include a targeted approach to the early, user-centred development of start-up ideas. The incubator thus creates a link between research, users, design and entrepreneurship, and supports researchers and students in developing viable innovations based on scientific findings and specific problems. Interested students, researchers and those keen to start a business can now register for the various programmes and advisory services. The Makerlab will launch with the STARTUP DISCOVERY LAB. In this twelve-week incubator programme, participants are guided step by step from the initial problem definition, through idea development, stakeholder and user experiences, and prototyping, right through to the validation of the solution and the development of a viable business model. In the process, aspiring founders can refine their own start-up ideas and develop them into scalable business models. Further intensive programmes and methodological coaching sessions are planned, including design sprints, prototyping workshops and sessions on user research and business model development.

Mit dem Startup Designer eröffnet am STIMULATE Campus im Magdeburger Wissenschaftshafen ein neuer ego.-INKUBATOR zur Unterstützung von frühphasigen Gründungsvorhaben und Innovationsprojekten. Im Mittelpunkt steht Design Thinking als nutzerzentrierte Methode zur Entwicklung, Erprobung und Weiterentwicklung innovativer Ideen. Der Inkubator richtet sich insbesondere an Studierende, Forschende und Gründungsinteressierte und bietet Raum, Methoden und Begleitung, um aus ersten Ideen konkrete und marktfähige Konzepte zu entwickeln.
Für die praktische Umsetzung steht ein modular gestalteter Innovationsraum zur Verfügung. Flexible Arbeitsmöglichkeiten, Prototyping-Materialien und digitale Werkzeuge schaffen eine Umgebung für kreatives, kollaboratives und interdisziplinäres Arbeiten. Ergänzt wird die Infrastruktur durch die Begleitung von Coaches und externen Expert:innen. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt des Inkubators liegt auf Gründungsideen aus der Medizintechnik sowie auf kreislauforientierter und nachhaltiger Produktentwicklung. Durch die frühe Einbindung potenzieller Nutzer:innen sollen technologische Entwicklungen bereits in einer frühen Phase auf ihren tatsächlichen Bedarf und ihre Anwendungsperspektiven hin überprüft werden.
„Mit dem Startup Designer schaffen wir einen Ort, an dem interdisziplinäre Teams frühzeitig am realen Bedarf ausgerichtete Lösungen entwickeln können. Das verkürzt nicht nur den Weg von der Idee zum Prototyp erheblich, sondern erhöht auch die Chancen auf langfristig erfolgreiche Gründungen“, erklärt Prof. Georg Rose, Sprecher des Forschungscampus STIMULATE.
Mit der Eröffnung des Startup Designers erweitert die OVGU ihr bestehendes Gründungs- und Transferökosystem um einen gezielten Ansatz für die frühe, nutzerzentrierte Entwicklung von Gründungsideen. Der Inkubator schafft damit eine Schnittstelle zwischen Forschung, Nutzer:in, Design und Unternehmertum und unterstützt Wissenschaftler:innen und Studierende dabei, aus wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen und konkreten Problemstellungen tragfähige Innovationen zu entwickeln. Starten wird das Makerlab mit dem STARTUP DISCOVERY LAB. In dem zwölfwöchigen Inkubatorprogramm werden Teilnehmende Schritt für Schritt von der ersten Problemstellung über Ideenentwicklung, Stakeholder- und Nutzererfahrungen und Prototyping bis zur Validierung der Lösung und Entwicklung eines tragfähigen Geschäftsmodells begleitet. Dabei können angehende Gründer:innen die eigene Gründungsidee vertiefen und zu einem skalierungsfähigen Geschäftsmodell weiterentwickeln. Weitere Intensivformate und methodische Coachings, darunter Design Sprints, Prototyping-Workshops und Formate zur Nutzerforschung und Geschäftsmodellentwicklung sind geplant.
