Success at the MICCAI FOMO Challenge 2026: 2nd place for Team BrainAI

At this year’s FOMO Challenge 2026 (Foundation Models in Medical Imaging), held as part of the prestigious MICCAI Challenges, the team comprising Mohammad Rezapourian and Eric Einspänner secured 2nd place overall in Track 1 (Methods). With a weighted average rank of 8.5, the duo secured second place in a global field of participants.

The primary aim of the FOMO26 Challenge was to develop AI foundation models that understand brain MRIs so comprehensively that they can be used reliably and flexibly in real-world clinical settings. To this end, the BrainAI team utilised a very large dataset of over 300,000 brain scans (provided by the challenge) to explore novel pre-training methods and create models with strong generalisation capabilities across different scanners and hospitals. The models’ practical applicability was tested against seven medical tasks, including the accurate detection of strokes and tumours, as well as the avoidance of demographic biases.

The FOMO Challenge is one of the leading competitions for novel AI foundation models in the field of neuroradiological imaging. The outstanding performance of Mohammad Reza and Eric Einspänner impressively underscores the quality and effectiveness of the method they have developed.

Gesamtplatz in Track 1 (Methods) erzielt.
