Ground-breaking ceremony for STIMULATE 2: Research campus continues to grow
With the official ground-breaking ceremony for the STIMULATE 2 extension, the Research Campus STIMULATE reached an important milestone on 7 August 2026. Prof Dr Armin Willingmann, Minister for Science, Energy, Climate Protection and the Environment for the State of Saxony-Anhalt, presented the funding approval for the construction project. €17.5 million from the federal government’s special infrastructure fund has been made available for the extension. Together with funding from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, around €21 million will be invested in the new building.
The extension is being built in the Wissenschaftshafen, south of the existing Speicher A, and will expand the Research Campus to include modern laboratory space, offices and premises for start-ups, technology-focused spin-offs and new research partners. STIMULATE 2 will create the physical conditions needed to further expand research into image-guided, minimally invasive therapies and to establish new areas of focus in the fields of AI-supported medical devices, robotics and intelligent assistance systems. At the same time, the new facilities will strengthen knowledge and technology transfer as well as start-up support on campus. Through close collaboration between academia, clinical practice and industry, innovative research findings are set to be translated even more quickly into marketable medical technologies and improved patient care in future.
The event began with a welcome address to the guests by the Vice-Chancellor of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Strackeljan. Following a presentation of the Research Campus by Prof Dr Georg Rose and a video message from State Secretary Dr Jungk of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, participants were given an insight into current research into interventional computed tomography and medical robotics. The highlights of the event were the presentation of the funding approval letter and the joint ground-breaking ceremony at the construction site of the new building.
STIMULATE 2 represents far more than just a new research building: the Research Campus is being expanded into a high-performance medical technology ecosystem. The funding represents a strong commitment to cutting-edge research, knowledge and technology transfer, and the economic development of the region. With this extension, STIMULATE is continuing on its successful growth trajectory. Since being included in the federal government’s Research Campus Initiative in 2013, the campus has developed into one of the leading centres for image-guided, minimally invasive medical technology. Today, STIMULATE brings together over 40 core partners and more than 100 further collaborative partners worldwide from academia, clinical practice and industry, creating ideal conditions for bringing medical innovations into clinical use more quickly.
The Research Campus STIMULATE would like to express its sincere thanks to the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), the Ministry of Science, Energy, Climate Protection and the Environment of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, and the Ministry of Finance of the State of Saxony-Anhalt for their long-standing, trusting cooperation and sustained support in the further development of the Research Campus. Spatenstich für STIMULATE 2: Forschungscampus wächst weiter
Mit dem offiziellen Spatenstich für den Erweiterungsbau STIMULATE 2 hat der Forschungscampus STIMULATE am 7. August 2026 einen wichtigen Meilenstein erreicht. Wissenschaftsminister Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann, Minister für Wissenschaft, Energie, Klimaschutz und Umwelt des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt, überreichte den Förderbescheid für das Bauvorhaben. Für die Erweiterung stehen 17,5 Millionen Euro aus dem Infrastruktur-Sondervermögen des Bundes zur Verfügung. Gemeinsam mit Eigenmitteln der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg werden rund 21 Millionen Euro in den Neubau investiert.
Der Erweiterungsbau entsteht im Wissenschaftshafen südlich des bestehenden Speicher A und erweitert den Forschungscampus um moderne Laborflächen, Büros sowie Räume für Start-ups, technologieorientierte Ausgründungen und neue Forschungspartner. Mit STIMULATE 2 werden die räumlichen Voraussetzungen geschaffen, um die Forschung zu bildgestützten minimalinvasiven Therapien weiter auszubauen und neue Schwerpunkte in den Bereichen KI-gestützte Medizinprodukte, Robotik und intelligente Assistenzsysteme zu etablieren. Die neuen Flächen stärken zugleich den Wissens- und Technologietransfer sowie die Gründungsförderung am Campus. Durch die enge Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaft, Klinik und Industrie sollen innovative Forschungsergebnisse künftig noch schneller in marktfähige Medizintechnologien und eine verbesserte Patientenversorgung überführt werden.
Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung begrüßte zunächst der Rektor der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Strackeljan, die Gäste. Nach einer Vorstellung des Forschungscampus durch Prof. Dr. Georg Rose sowie einem Videogrußwort von Staatssekretär Dr. Jungk aus dem Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt erhielten die Teilnehmenden Einblicke in aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten zur interventionellen Computertomographie und medizinischen Robotik. Den Höhepunkt bildeten die Übergabe des Förderbescheids und der gemeinsame Spatenstich auf der Baustelle des neuen Gebäudes.
Mit STIMULATE 2 entsteht weit mehr als ein neues Forschungsgebäude: Der Forschungscampus wird zu einem leistungsfähigen Medizintechnik-Ökosystem erweitert. Die Förderung sei ein starkes Bekenntnis zur Spitzenforschung, zum Wissens- und Technologietransfer sowie zur wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung des Standorts. Mit dem Erweiterungsbau setzt STIMULATE seinen erfolgreichen Wachstumskurs fort. Seit der Aufnahme in die Forschungscampus-Initiative des Bundes im Jahr 2013 hat sich der Campus zu einem der führenden Zentren für bildgestützte minimalinvasive Medizintechnik entwickelt. STIMULATE vereint heute über 40 Kernpartner sowie weltweit mehr als 100 weitere Kooperationspartner aus Wissenschaft, Klinik und Industrie und schafft ideale Voraussetzungen, um medizinische Innovationen schneller in die klinische Anwendung zu bringen.
