Four STIMULATE start-ups among Saxony-Anhalt’s best-known start-ups
The Research Campus STIMULATE had cause to celebrate a particular success: no fewer than four spin-offs from its innovation ecosystem were featured in Webwirtschaft’s latest ranking of Saxony-Anhalt’s best-known start-ups. The ranking takes into account media coverage and public perception over the past five years, thereby highlighting the state’s most prominent young technology companies. Particularly pleasing: RAYDIAX, a medical technology start-up, achieved 5th place in the state-wide ranking. Together with the (former) start-ups and young companies InLine-Med, meshWERK and Neoscan Solutions, this impressively demonstrates how excellent research gives rise to marketable innovations. The ranking is based on public perception of the companies in the media, at competitions and within the start-up scene, and underlines the visibility of Magdeburg as a hub for medical technology.
These four start-ups exemplify the innovative strength of the Research Campus STIMULATE. InLine-Med has developed solutions for minimally invasive procedures and the precise guidance of instruments during image-guided procedures. meshWERK develops AI-supported solutions for digital knowledge sharing and the efficient transfer of complex specialist knowledge – extending far beyond medical technology. Neoscan Solutions is bringing innovative MRI technologies for diagnostics and research to market, thereby attracting international attention: last year, the company was commissioned by a Dutch consortium to develop the main component of the world’s most powerful 14-Tesla MRI system. RAYDIAX is developing a novel therapeutic CT scanner for image-guided cancer treatments and aims to combine diagnosis and interventional therapy in a single system. Following its win of the Saxony-Anhalt Business Award in 2024, the company is now also ranked among Europe’s most innovative deep-tech start-ups after securing the European Innovation Council (EIC) Grant.
It is no coincidence that these companies have been able to develop successfully. The Research Campus STIMULATE offers a unique innovation ecosystem that has been closely linking academia, industry and clinical practice for more than a decade. Over 40 closely collaborating partners and more than 100 further partners from research, industry and the healthcare sector are working together here on image-guided, minimally invasive therapies and medical technologies. The founders benefit from a state-of-the-art research infrastructure comprising CT, MRI and angiography laboratories, robotics, VR/AR and electronics laboratories, workshops for prototype development, and a broad network of clinical and industrial partners.
In the field of medical technology in particular, setting up a start-up presents specific challenges. In addition to technological excellence, start-ups must navigate regulatory approvals, quality management, clinical validation, the protection of intellectual property, and lengthy development and time-to-market periods. The Research Campus STIMULATE plays a key role in helping to overcome these hurdles: through early access to clinical partners, state-of-the-art infrastructure, industry-oriented research, experienced mentors and a strong transfer network, innovative ideas can be efficiently transformed into marketable products.
Another key to success is academic education and continuing professional development. Through specialised degree programmes such as Medical Systems Engineering, practice-oriented courses, research projects, dissertations, industry partnerships and continuing professional development programmes for academia, hospitals and businesses, STIMULATE creates an environment in which entrepreneurial thinking is fostered right from the start of students’ studies. Specialist colloquia, hackathons, workshops and close collaboration with the STIMULATE Association further strengthen the culture of innovation and facilitate the journey from a research idea to a successful spin-off.
The rankings of the four STIMULATE start-ups demonstrate that sustainable innovations emerge where excellent research, interdisciplinary collaboration and targeted start-up support come together. At the same time, the Research Campus demonstrates that its start-up ecosystem is continuously producing new innovations: further spin-offs are already in the pipeline. These include, amongst others, SCANATIQ, which has already been awarded an EXIST grant from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE).
The Research Campus STIMULATE has thus established itself as one of the most important incubators for medical technology start-ups in Saxony-Anhalt and plays a crucial role in successfully translating scientific findings into medical practice and the market.
Vier STIMULATE-Startups unter den bekanntesten Gründungen Sachsen-Anhalts
Der Forschungscampus STIMULATE konnte sich über einen besonderen Erfolg freuen: Gleich vier Ausgründungen aus seinem Innovationsökosystem wurden im aktuellen Ranking der bekanntesten Startups Sachsen-Anhalts von Webwirtschaft aufgeführt. Das Ranking berücksichtigt die Medienpräsenz und öffentliche Wahrnehmung der vergangenen fünf Jahre und macht damit die prominentesten jungen Technologieunternehmen des Landes sichtbar. Besonders erfreulich: RAYDIAX erreichte als Medizintechnik-Startup Platz 5 im landesweiten Ranking. Zusammen mit den (ehemaligen) Startups bzw. jungen Unternehmen InLine-Med, meshWERK und Neoscan Solutions zeigt sich eindrucksvoll, wie aus exzellenter Forschung marktfähige Innovationen entstehen. Das Ranking basiert auf der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung der Unternehmen in Medien, Wettbewerben und der Startup-Szene und unterstreicht die Sichtbarkeit des Medizintechnikstandorts Magdeburg.
Die vier Startups stehen exemplarisch für die Innovationskraft des Forschungscampus STIMULATE. InLine-Med entwickelte Lösungen für minimal-invasive Interventionen und die präzise Instrumentenführung bei bildgeführten Eingriffen. meshWERK entwickelt KI-gestützte Lösungen für die digitale Wissensvermittlung und den effizienten Transfer komplexen Fachwissens – weit über die Medizintechnik hinaus. Neoscan Solutions bringt innovative MRT-Technologien für Diagnostik und Forschung zur Marktreife und sorgt damit international für Aufmerksamkeit: Das Unternehmen erhielt im vergangenen Jahr den Auftrag eines niederländischen Konsortiums, die Hauptkomponente des weltweit stärksten MRT-Systems mit 14 Tesla zu entwickeln. RAYDIAX entwickelt einen neuartigen Therapie-CT für bildgeführte Krebsbehandlungen und verfolgt das Ziel, Diagnose und interventionelle Therapie in einem System zu vereinen. Nach dem Wirtschaftspreis Sachsen-Anhalt im Jahr 2024 zählt das Unternehmen mit dem Gewinn des European Innovation Council (EIC) Grant inzwischen auch europaweit zu den innovativsten Deep-Tech-Startups.
Dass sich diese Unternehmen erfolgreich entwickeln konnten, ist kein Zufall. Der Forschungscampus STIMULATE bietet ein einzigartiges Innovationsökosystem, das Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Klinik seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt eng miteinander verbindet. Über 40 eng kooperierende und über 100 weitere Partner aus Forschung, Industrie und Gesundheitswesen arbeiten hier gemeinsam an bildgeführten minimal-invasiven Therapien und medizinischen Technologien. Die Gründerinnen und Gründer profitieren dabei von einer modernen Forschungsinfrastruktur mit CT-, MRT- und Angiographie-Laboren, Robotik-, VR/AR- und Elektroniklaboren, Werkstätten für Prototypenentwicklung sowie einem breiten Netzwerk aus klinischen und industriellen Partnern.
Gerade im Bereich der Medizintechnik stellt die Gründung eines Startups besondere Anforderungen. Neben technologischer Exzellenz sind regulatorische Zulassungen, Qualitätsmanagement, klinische Validierung, der Schutz geistigen Eigentums sowie lange Entwicklungs- und Markteinführungszeiten zu bewältigen. Der Forschungscampus STIMULATE trägt wesentlich dazu bei, diese Hürden zu reduzieren: Durch den frühzeitigen Zugang zu klinischen Partnern, modernster Infrastruktur, industrienaher Forschung, erfahrenen Mentorinnen und Mentoren sowie einem starken Transfernetzwerk können innovative Ideen effizient in marktfähige Produkte überführt werden.
Ein weiterer Erfolgsfaktor ist die akademische Aus- und Weiterbildung. Mit spezialisierten Studiengängen wie Medical Systems Engineering, praxisnahen Lehrveranstaltungen, Forschungsprojekten, Abschlussarbeiten, Industriekooperationen sowie Weiterbildungsformaten für Wissenschaft, Klinik und Unternehmen schafft STIMULATE ein Umfeld, in dem unternehmerisches Denken bereits während der Ausbildung gefördert wird. Fachkolloquien, Hackathons, Workshops und der enge Austausch mit dem STIMULATE-Verein stärken zusätzlich die Innovationskultur und erleichtern den Weg von der Forschungsidee bis zur erfolgreichen Ausgründung.
Die Platzierungen der vier STIMULATE-Startups verdeutlichen, dass nachhaltige Innovationen dort entstehen, wo exzellente Forschung, interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit und gezielte Gründungsförderung zusammenkommen. Gleichzeitig zeigt der Forschungscampus, dass sein Gründungsökosystem kontinuierlich neue Innovationen hervorbringt: Weitere Ausgründungen befinden sich bereits in Vorbereitung. Dazu zählt unter anderem SCANATIQ, das bereits mit einer EXIST-Förderung des Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft und Energie (BMWE) ausgezeichnet wurde.
Der Forschungscampus STIMULATE hat sich damit als einer der wichtigsten Nährböden für medizintechnische Startups in Sachsen-Anhalt etabliert und leistet einen entscheidenden Beitrag dazu, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse erfolgreich in die medizinische Praxis und den Markt zu überführen.
