RISEMED4EU: Insights into leading medtech ecosystems in Helsinki and Barcelona
As part of the European Interreg Europe project RISEMED4EU, project partners and stakeholders visited the MedTech ecosystem in Helsinki in June 2026. The aim of the site visit was to learn about successful approaches to innovation, technology transfer and collaboration between the healthcare sector, research and industry.
Background: In the RISEMED4EU project, eight European regions are working together to improve the framework conditions for innovation in medical technology. The state of Saxony-Anhalt is leading the project, whilst the Research Campus STIMULATE and Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg are contributing their expertise to the project as advisory partners. The STIMULATE partners BEC Medical, Neoscan Solutions, Prof. Dr De Luca from the Faculty of Computer Science, the Transfer Group and transFORM from the transPORT TransferRaum initiative took part in the site visit in Helsinki.
The site visit to Helsinki focused on the activities of the Clever Health Network at HUS Helsinki University Hospital. Innovative solutions were presented, such as home dialysis, AI-assisted diagnostics and data-driven applications for patient care, which are being developed through close collaboration between clinics and companies. During the visit to GE HealthCare Finland, participants also gained insights into modern research, development and production processes in the field of medical technology.
At Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, the Health Proof Helsinki initiative presented its testing and validation infrastructure. In particular, the simulation hospital and the clinical laboratory environments demonstrated how new technologies can be tested under realistic conditions. The programme was complemented by a discussion on regulatory requirements and their significance for the successful market launch of medtech innovations.
The RISEMED4EU delegation had already visited Barcelona’s innovation ecosystem back in November 2025. At the Catalonia Health Campus and the Barcelona Science Park, participants gained insights into successful models for supporting start-ups, technology transfer and business growth. The combination of research infrastructure, start-up support and close networking between academia, industry and investors made it clear why the region is one of Europe’s leading health and biotechnology hubs.
The visits to Helsinki and Barcelona highlight that successful medtech ecosystems are based on strong networks, shared infrastructure and close collaboration between research, healthcare, industry and regulators. The insights gained are now being incorporated into the ongoing work of the RISEMED4EU project and are supporting the development of sustainable innovation strategies in the partner regions.
RISEMED4EU: Einblicke in führende MedTech-Ökosysteme in Helsinki und Barcelona
Im Rahmen des europäischen Interreg-Europe-Projekts RISEMED4EU besuchten Projektpartner und Stakeholder im Juni 2026 das MedTech-Ökosystem in Helsinki. Ziel der Site Visit war es, erfolgreiche Ansätze für Innovation, Technologietransfer und die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Gesundheitswesen, Forschung und Industrie kennenzulernen.
Hintergrund: Im Projekt RISEMED4EU arbeiten acht europäische Regionen gemeinsam daran, die Rahmenbedingungen für Innovationen in der Medizintechnik zu verbessern. Das Land Sachsen-Anhalt übernimmt die Projektleitung, während der Forschungscampus STIMULATE und die Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg ihre Expertise als Advisory Partner in das Projekt einbringen. An der Site Visit in Helsinki beteiligten sich die STIMULATE-Partner BEC Medical, Neoscan Solutions, Prof. Dr. De Luca aus der Fakultät für Informatik, die Transfergruppe und transFORM aus der TransferRaum Initiative transPORT.
Im Mittelpunkt der Site Visit in Helsinki standen die Aktivitäten des Clever Health Network am HUS Helsinki University Hospital. Vorgestellt wurden innovative Lösungen wie Heimdialyse, KI-gestützte Diagnostik und datenbasierte Anwendungen für die Patientenversorgung, die durch die enge Zusammenarbeit von Kliniken und Unternehmen entwickelt werden. Beim Besuch von GE HealthCare Finland erhielten die Teilnehmenden zudem Einblicke in moderne Forschungs-, Entwicklungs- und Produktionsprozesse im Bereich der Medizintechnik.
An der Metropolia University of Applied Sciences präsentierte die Initiative Health Proof Helsinki ihre Test- und Validierungsinfrastruktur. Besonders das Simulationskrankenhaus und die kliniknahen Laborumgebungen zeigten, wie neue Technologien unter realistischen Bedingungen erprobt werden können. Ergänzt wurde das Programm durch einen Austausch zu regulatorischen Anforderungen und deren Bedeutung für die erfolgreiche Markteinführung von MedTech-Innovationen.
Bereits im November 2025 hatte die RISEMED4EU-Delegation das Innovationsökosystem in Barcelona besucht. Im Catalonia Health Campus und im Barcelona Science Park erhielten die Teilnehmenden Einblicke in erfolgreiche Modelle zur Förderung von Start-ups, Technologietransfer und Unternehmenswachstum. Die Kombination aus Forschungsinfrastruktur, Gründerunterstützung und enger Vernetzung von Wissenschaft, Industrie und Investoren machte deutlich, warum die Region zu den führenden europäischen Gesundheits- und Biotechnologiestandorten zählt.
Die Besuche in Helsinki und Barcelona verdeutlichen, dass erfolgreiche MedTech-Ökosysteme auf starken Netzwerken, gemeinsamer Infrastruktur und einer engen Zusammenarbeit zwischen Forschung, Gesundheitsversorgung, Wirtschaft und Regulatorik basieren. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse fließen nun in die weitere Projektarbeit von RISEMED4EU ein und unterstützen die Entwicklung zukunftsfähiger Innovationsstrategien in den Partnerregionen.
