Interdisciplinary seminar combines medical technology, entrepreneurship and design thinking
In the summer semester of 2026, the interdisciplinary seminar ‘Build your MedTech Business: Design Thinking and Medical Innovations’ was held for the first time at the ego incubator ‘Startup Designer’. This was a collaborative initiative between Prof. Dr Sadrieh’s business administration programme and Prof. Dr Rose’s medical technology programme, with support from the transPORT workshop transFORM at the Research Campus STIMULATE.
The seminar brought together students from a range of disciplines to jointly develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges in the healthcare sector. The aim of the programme was to combine medical innovation with entrepreneurial thinking and practical design thinking methods. Working in interdisciplinary teams, the participants went through the entire innovation process – from identifying relevant problems, through user interviews and idea generation, to the development of initial prototypes and market testing. The focus was particularly on user-centred development, experimental work and dealing professionally with uncertainty in the early stages of development.
The workshop was structured around five sequential phases:
- Understanding target groups,
- Defining problems,
- Generating ideas,
- Developing prototypes,
- Testing and learning.
Through workshops, teamwork and iterative feedback processes, students were able to experience first-hand how initial ideas develop into concrete medical technology product and service concepts. In addition, skills in the areas of communication, pitching and strategic thinking were taught. The module was aimed in particular at students with an interest in entrepreneurship and business start-ups. In addition to methodological skills, participants gained valuable insights into the requirements of innovative start-up processes in the medtech sector. The new seminar format further strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration between business and medical technology at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and made a practical contribution to the promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship.
Interdisziplinäres Seminar verbindet Medizintechnik, Entrepreneurship und Design Thinking
Im Sommersemester 2026 fand im ego-Inkubator „Startup Designer“ erstmals das interdisziplinäre Seminar „Build your MedTech Business: Design Thinking und medizinische Innovationen“ als Kooperation zwischen der Betriebswirtschaftslehre von Prof. Dr. Sadrieh und der Medizintechnik von Prof. Dr. Rose und mit Unterstützung der transPORT Werkstatt transFORM am Forschungscampus STIMULATE statt.
Das Seminar brachte Studierende unterschiedlicher Fachrichtungen zusammen, um gemeinsam innovative Lösungen für reale Herausforderungen im Gesundheitswesen zu entwickeln. Ziel des Formats war es, medizinische Innovationen mit unternehmerischem Denken und praxisnahen Methoden des Design Thinkings zu verbinden. In interdisziplinären Teams durchliefen die Teilnehmenden den gesamten Innovationsprozess – von der Identifikation relevanter Probleme über Nutzerinterviews und Ideengenerierung bis hin zur Entwicklung erster Prototypen und Markttests. Dabei standen insbesondere nutzerzentrierte Entwicklung, experimentelles Arbeiten sowie der professionelle Umgang mit Unsicherheit in frühen Entwicklungsphasen im Mittelpunkt.
Das Seminar orientierte sich an fünf aufeinander aufbauenden Phasen:

Durch Workshops, Teamarbeit und iterative Feedbackprozesse konnten die Studierenden praxisnah erleben, wie aus ersten Ideen konkrete medizintechnische Produkt- und Dienstleistungskonzepte entstehen. Ergänzend wurden Kompetenzen in den Bereichen Kommunikation, Pitching und strategisches Denken vermittelt. Das Modul richtete sich insbesondere an Studierende mit Interesse an Entrepreneurship und Unternehmensgründung. Neben methodischen Kompetenzen erhielten die Teilnehmenden wertvolle Einblicke in die Anforderungen innovativer Gründungsprozesse im MedTech-Bereich. Mit dem neuen Seminarformat wurde die interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit zwischen Wirtschaft und Medizintechnik an der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg weiter gestärkt und ein praxisorientierter Beitrag zur Förderung von Innovation und Entrepreneurship geleistet.
