The STIMULATE project as a ZIM success story
The “Web-AI Prostate” project, developed within the ZIM INSTANT cooperation network, has been recognised as a success story by the project management body of the Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM). This joint initiative between academia and clinical practice impressively demonstrates how artificial intelligence can bring about lasting improvements in medical diagnostics.
The project developed a web-based AI platform to support prostate cancer diagnosis. The solution combines MRI image data with clinical follow-up data such as PSA levels and other metadata. By utilising modern CNN architectures, the system often detected carcinomas more reliably than experienced radiologists and generates an automated, standardised report in under 30 seconds.
One particular innovative feature is uncertainty visualisation: the AI not only highlights suspicious areas on the MRI scan in colour, but also indicates the reliability of its assessment. This provides doctors with targeted support in their decision-making and helps to reduce misdiagnoses and unnecessary biopsies. Local data processing without a cloud connection also meets high data protection requirements and enables MRI scans without the use of contrast agents.
The AI-based algorithms, uncertainty models and scientific validation were developed by the ‘Human-Machine Interaction’ research group at the Research Campus STIMULATE of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. ALTA Klinik GmbH contributed its clinical expertise, real-world patient data and the implementation of the platform within existing image data infrastructures (PACS). The solution is already being used successfully in clinical practice and is set to be rolled out to further partners in the future.
The project facilitated interdisciplinary collaboration within the ZIM innovation network INSTANT, which brings together stakeholders from the fields of AI research, medical technology and clinical application. The recognition as a ZIM success story highlights the significance and practical benefits of the AI technologies developed at the Research Campus STIMULATE.

STIMULATE-Projekt als ZIM-Erfolgsbeispiel
Das im ZIM-Kooperationsnetzwerk INSTANT entstandene Projekt „Web-KI Prostate“ wurde vom Projektträger des Zentralen Innovationsprogramms Mittelstand (ZIM) als Erfolgsbeispiel ausgezeichnet. Das gemeinsame Vorhaben von Wissenschaft und Klinik zeigt eindrucksvoll, wie Künstliche Intelligenz die medizinische Diagnostik nachhaltig verbessern kann.
Im Projekt wurde eine webbasierte KI-Plattform zur Unterstützung der Prostatakrebsdiagnostik entwickelt. Die Lösung kombiniert MRT-Bilddaten mit klinischen Verlaufsdaten wie PSA-Werten und weiteren Metadaten. Durch den Einsatz moderner CNN-Architekturen erkannte das System Karzinome häufig zuverlässiger als erfahrene Radiolog:innen und erstellt innerhalb von unter 30 Sekunden einen automatisierten, standardisierten Befund.
Ein besonderer Innovationsaspekt ist die Unsicherheitsvisualisierung: Die KI markiert nicht nur verdächtige Areale im MRT farblich, sondern zeigt auch die Zuverlässigkeit ihrer Einschätzung an. Dies unterstützt Ärzt:innen gezielt bei der Entscheidungsfindung und trägt dazu bei, Fehldiagnosen und unnötige Biopsien zu reduzieren. Die lokale Datenverarbeitung ohne Cloud-Anbindung erfüllt zudem hohe Datenschutzanforderungen und ermöglicht kontrastmittelfreie MRT-Untersuchungen.
Die KI-basierte Algorithmen, Unsicherheitsmodelle und wissenschaftliche Validierung wurden der Forschungsgruppe „Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion“ des Forschungscampus STIMULATE der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg entwickelt. Die ALTA Klinik GmbH brachte ihre klinische Expertise, reale Patientendaten sowie die Implementierung der Plattform in bestehende Bilddateninfrastrukturen (PACS) ein. Die Lösung wird bereits erfolgreich in der klinischen Praxis eingesetzt und soll künftig bei weiteren Partnern ausgerollt werden.
Das Projekt ermöglichte die interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit innerhalb des ZIM-Innovationsnetzwerks INSTANT, das Akteure aus den Bereichen KI-Forschung, Medizintechnik und klinische Anwendung miteinander verbindet. Die Auszeichnung als ZIM-Erfolgsbeispiel hebt die Bedeutung und den praktischen Nutzen der am Forschungscampus STIMULATE entwickelten KI-Technologien hervor.
