Medical Journey Through Time exhibition at the Research Campus
The exhibition ‘Medizinische Zeitreise’ (Medical Journey Through Time) is on display in the foyer of our building (G82 in the Magdeburg Science Harbour). An initiative of transSCAPE | transPORT in cooperation with the Research Campus STIMULATE and the 3ios project, the exhibition creates an open space for exchange, inspiration and interdisciplinary perspectives.
The exhibition builds a bridge between the past, present and future of medical technology: partners of the Research Campus STIMULATE, such as Neoscan Solutions, RAYDIAX and Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, present the latest developments in diagnostic imaging. Using QR codes, visitors can experience the imaging technologies being researched in augmented reality via their smartphones. The 3ios team complements this perspective with a historical medical technology collection, creating an impressive contrast that highlights technological developments over decades. Many of the devices on display are robust, locally available and feature clear user guidance – qualities that are once again central to frugal medtech innovations today.

Exhibition contents of ‘Medical Journey Through Time’:
Many of the historical devices demonstrate a focus on the essentials: ease of repair, robust construction, locally available materials and clear user guidance. These principles correspond exactly to the frugal innovation approaches that transPORT/transSUSTAIN has identified as the key to resource-efficient and sustainable healthcare – especially for rural areas and regions undergoing demographic change.
The exhibition is intended as a space for reflection and invites visitors to ask a key question: What ideas can be drawn from this line of development, from GDR medical technology to the 3ios project and STIMULATE, for future frugal medtech innovations.
In order to further explore the topic of frugal innovations, as researched in transPORT/transSUSTAIN, the exhibition ties in with the project's first white papers and applies their guiding principles to historical and current examples from medical technology.
This exhibition is an initiative of the transSCAPE workshop. It is dedicated to knowledge transfer between different actors and creates a space where innovation, experimentation and interdisciplinary exchange take centre stage.
Contributing partners:
The OVGU's Historical Medical Technology Collection was established in the early 1990s when the University Hospital, which emerged from the Magdeburg Medical Academy, sorted out many devices produced in the GDR. The collection is managed by the management of the IT and Medical Technology Division of the University Hospital.
STIMULATE is an interdisciplinary Research Campus where teams from clinical practice, industry and science work together to research and develop solutions and technologies for image-guided minimally invasive medicine. The aim is to develop innovative, patient-friendly and high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic procedures specifically required for the treatment of diseases in oncology, neurology and cardiology.
transPORT is the transfer and innovation network in Magdeburg's Science Harbour.
Its focus is on building a strong medtech ecosystem: it boosts the visibility of regional medical technology, supports start-up processes and creates formats that bring together science, business and society. This creates a dynamic innovation space that links medicine, technology and urban development.

Im Foyer unseres Gebäudes (G82 im Wissenschaftshafen Magdeburg) ist die Ausstellung „Medizinische Zeitreise“ zu sehen. Als Initiative von transSCAPE | transPORT in Kooperation mit dem Forschungscampus STIMULATE und dem Projekt 3ios schafft die Ausstellung einen offenen Raum für Austausch, Inspiration und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven.
In der Ausstellung wird eine Brücke zwischen Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft von Medizintechnik geschlagen: Partner des Forschungscampus STIMULATE wie Neoscan Solutions, RAYDIAX und Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg präsentieren hier aktuelle Entwicklungen in der bildgebenden Diagnostik. Durch die Nutzung von QR-Codes sind erforschte Bildgebungstechnologien via Smartphone in augmentierter Realität erlebbar. Das Team von 3ios ergänzt diese Perspektive mit einer historischen Medizintechnik-Sammlung und schafft so eine eindrucksvolle Kontrastierung, die die technologische Entwicklung über Jahrzehnte hinweg sichtbar macht. Viele der gezeigten Geräte weisen Robustheit, lokale Verfügbarkeit und klare Benutzerführung auf – Qualitäten, die heute wieder zentral für frugale MedTech-Innovationen sind.

Inhalte der Ausstellung „Medizinische Zeitreise“:
Viele der historischen Geräte zeigen eine Konzentration auf das Wesentliche: einfache Reparierbarkeit, robuste Konstruktion, lokal verfügbare Materialien und eine klare Benutzerführung. Diese Prinzipien entsprechen genau jenen frugalen Innovationsansätzen, die transPORT/transSUSTAIN als Schlüssel für eine ressourcenschonende und zukunftsfähige Gesundheitsversorgung identifiziert – besonders für ländliche Räume und Regionen im demografischen Wandel.
Die Ausstellung versteht sich als Reflexionsraum und lädt dazu ein, eine zentrale Frage zu stellen: Welche Impulse ergeben sich aus dieser Entwicklungslinie: Von der DDR-Medizintechnik über das 3ios-Projekt bis hin zu STIMULATE – für zukünftige frugale MedTech-Innovationen.
Um das Thema frugale Innovationen, wie sie in transPORT/transSUSTAIN erforscht werden, weiter zu vertiefen, knüpft die Ausstellung an die ersten White Paper des Projekts an und überträgt deren Leitgedanken auf historische und aktuelle Beispiele aus der Medizintechnik.
Diese Ausstellung ist eine Initiative der transSCAPE-Werkstatt. Sie widmet sich dem Wissenstransfer zwischen verschiedenen Akteur:innen und schafft einen Raum, in dem Innovation, Experimentieren und interdisziplinärer Austausch im Mittelpunkt stehen.

Die Historische Medizintechnische Sammlung der OVGU ist Anfang der 1990er Jahre entstanden, als das aus der Medizinischen Akademie Magdeburg hervorgegangene Universitätsklinikum viele in der DDR produzierte Geräte aussortierte. Verwaltet wird die Sammlung von der Leitung des Geschäftsbereichs IT und Medizintechnik des Universitätsklinikums.
STIMULATE ist ein interdisziplinärer Forschungscampus, in welchem Teams aus Klinik, Industrie und Wissenschaft gemeinsam Lösungen und Technologien für die bildgeführte minimal-invasive Medizin erforschen und entwickeln. Ziele sind innovative, patientenfreundliche und hochwertige diagnostische wie therapeutische Verfahren, die gezielt für die Behandlung von Erkrankungen in der Onkologie, Neurologie und Kardiologie benötigt werden.
transPORT ist das Transfer- und Innovationsnetzwerk im Magdeburger Wissenschaftshafen. Im Mittelpunkt steht der Aufbau eines starken MedTech-Ökosystems: Es stärkt die Sichtbarkeit der regionalen Medizintechnik, unterstützt Gründungsprozesse und schafft Formate, in denen Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft zusammenkommen. So entsteht ein dynamischer Innovationsraum, der Medizin, Technik und urbane Entwicklung miteinander verknüpft.
