Minimally invasive procedures enable the treatment of numerous conditions without the need for major surgical incisions. However, particularly in the case of tumours and vascular diseases, the complex anatomical structures and individual differences between patients place high demands on treatment planning. Precise preparation is therefore crucial to minimising risks, preserving healthy tissue and improving treatment outcomes. The PRECISE research project addresses this need. Its aim is to develop innovative, AI-supported technologies that assist doctors in the patient-specific planning, optimisation and evaluation of minimally invasive procedures.

The focus is on the intelligent analysis of medical imaging data, computer-aided simulation of different treatment scenarios, and the development of digital assistance systems. With the help of artificial intelligence, for example, suitable access routes to tumours are to be identified, the targeted destruction of tumour tissue using heat is to be optimised, and potential risks are to be assessed even before a procedure takes place. Another key area of focus is the treatment of cardiovascular and vascular diseases. Here, researchers are investigating, amongst other things, how different treatment strategies and the use of vascular implants affect blood flow patterns and the vascular walls. Computer simulations and experimental studies are intended to help better predict the effects of procedures and identify suitable treatment approaches. The methods developed are being translated into prototype software solutions and assessed for their practical applicability. In the long term, they are intended to help inform medical decisions on a more robust data basis and to tailor treatments more closely to individual anatomical and physiological conditions.

The research project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ZS/2025/09/206837).
