The project aims to develop strategies for optimizing stroke care, particularly in emergency medical services, with the goal of making the capabilities of a Stroke Unit largely available within an ambulance.
To achieve this, ASTER will establish a medical telematics platform for the ambulance (RTW) to enhance emergency care for stroke patients. A "mobile ambulance assistant" will support emergency personnel in tasks such as selecting the appropriate hospital, managing further medical interventions in the ambulance, conducting teleconsultations, or requesting helicopter support. Medical patient data such as oxygen saturation, blood sugar, and ECG will be collected on-site and integrated with information about the target hospital (specialization, physician availability, occupancy rate), traffic telematics (traffic conditions, route, road conditions, traffic light control), and vehicle data. This information will then be processed and presented to the ambulance personnel via clinical decision support systems within the ambulance. Selected information will also be transmitted to the target hospital to prepare necessary arrangements.

Dazu soll in ASTER eine medizinische Telematikplattform für den Rettungstransportwagen (RTW) zur optimierten Notfallversorgung von Schlaganfallpatienten aufgebaut werden. Ein “mobiler Ambulanz-Assistent” soll dem Rettungspersonal Hilfestellung beispielsweise bei der Auswahl der Zielklinik, den weiteren medizinischen Maßnahmen im RTW, der Durchführung eines Telekonsils oder der Hubschrauberanforderung geben. Medizinische Patientendaten wie Sauerstoffsättigung, Blutzucker und EKG werden vor Ort erfasst und mit Informationen über die Zielklinik (Spezialisierung, Ärztebereitschaft, Belegungsgrad), verkehrstelematischen Daten (Verkehrslage, Wegstrecke, Wegbeschaffenheit, Ampelsteuerung) und Fahrzeugdaten verknüpft. Die Informationen werden anschließend im RTW für das Rettungspersonal durch klinische Decision-Support-Systeme aufbereitet und dargestellt. Zudem werden ausgewählte Informationen an die Zielklinik übertragen, um dort notwendige Vorbereitungen zu treffen.
